I Adopted My Fiancée’s 10-Year-Old Daughter Despite My Terminal Illness – Weeks After, My Doctor Whispered, ‘There’s Something I Should’ve Told You Much Earlier’

My sister Melissa showed up to Mom’s 70th birthday carrying a designer handbag, then slipped just $20 into her card and joked, “At her age, she doesn’t need much.”

Mom smiled, but I could tell the comment hurt.

The next day, I gave Mom a scrapbook filled with childhood memories. One copied page from an old notebook made Melissa panic.

That’s when Mom opened a locked drawer.

Inside were records showing she had given Melissa $137,500 over the years—money for a house, difficult periods, and her husband’s growing business.

I was furious.

Then Mom explained something I hadn’t expected.

She had never truly planned to collect most of it back. Instead, she considered the money part of Melissa’s future inheritance and had carefully tracked everything so I would eventually receive an equal amount.

But Mom admitted the birthday still hurt.

Not because of the $20.

Because Melissa had said, “At her age, she doesn’t need much.”

“I’m seventy,” Mom told her. “I’m not finished. I still like things. I still want to go places. I still want people to think about me.”

Melissa finally broke down.

She realized that because Mom rarely asked for anything, she had started assuming Mom needed nothing.

The next thing Melissa asked was simple:

“Do you still want to visit that lake you always loved?”

Mom smiled.

“Of course I do.”

“Then let’s go.”
