The Checkout Surprise I’ll Never Forget

I went to the supermarket with just enough money for bread and milk. Nothing extra—just the basics.
At checkout, I noticed someone behind me quietly adding items to my bill—meat, cheese, salami… all the things I’d been craving but couldn’t afford. I was about to tell the cashier there must be a mistake.
Then I turned around.
It was my dad.
He stood there with a cart full of food, smiling like it was nothing. In that moment, something so simple felt overwhelming.
I never thought ordinary groceries could feel like the greatest gift.
But they did.
