My DIL Disrespected Me, but My Son’s Reaction Was the Real Shock

For my son’s wedding, I chose what I thought was an elegant white dress. I truly didn’t mean anything by it. But the moment my future daughter-in-law saw me, her face turned red with anger.
“It’s NOT your day!” she shouted in front of everyone.
The room went silent. My son said nothing.
I was humiliated.
Then came the moment no one expected. When the officiant asked my son if he took her to be his wife, he hesitated. He looked at her… then at me… and finally said:
“No.”
My heart dropped.
He explained he loved her, but he couldn’t start a marriage surrounded by constant tension and fighting. Just like that, the wedding was over. Thousands of dollars wasted. Guests whispering as they left. My future daughter-in-law crying. And my son caught in the middle of it all.
Later, he suggested they still get married privately someday — without the family drama.
But I can’t stop replaying everything in my head.
Yes, maybe wearing white was a mistake. But I never wanted attention or competition. I only wanted to celebrate my son. Still, the way she spoke to me felt cruel and disrespectful.
Now I’m left wondering if this can ever be repaired… or if one dress destroyed our family before the marriage even began.
