At 34 weeks pregnant, I was exhausted almost all the time. One evening, my husband asked if several friends could come over.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t thrilled, but he promised they would stay quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t have much freedom once the baby arrives,\u201d he said. \u201cI just want one final night with the guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

I agreed and went to bed early.<\/p>\n

Hours later, my husband shook me awake. It was nearly two in the morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guys are hungry,\u201d he said. \u201cCan you make everyone something to eat?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him, thinking he was joking.<\/p>\n

When I refused, he became irritated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been sleeping for hours,\u201d he said loudly. \u201cIt won\u2019t kill you to be a good host.\u201d<\/p>\n

His friends heard everything.<\/p>\n

I felt humiliated. My back hurt, my feet were swollen, and the man who was supposed to protect me treated me like his servant.<\/p>\n

I quietly packed a bag and drove to my sister\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

The next morning, he called repeatedly. Apparently, after I left, his friends confronted him. One of them said, \u201cYour pregnant wife is about to give birth, and you woke her to cook for us? What is wrong with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

He apologized, but I told him apologies weren\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n

Before I returned, he began counseling and made real changes.<\/p>\n
