A 911 operator answered what initially sounded like a mistaken call.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Ryan,\u201d a young boy whispered. \u201cCould you please help me with math?\u201d<\/p>\n

The operator gently explained that emergency services could not help with homework. But Ryan became frightened and begged her not to hang up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom said 911 helps people,\u201d he said. \u201cPlease help me with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about his voice felt wrong.<\/p>\n

The operator asked Ryan to hand the phone to his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he whispered. \u201cIt\u2019s only me. Mommy is lying on the kitchen floor, and she won\u2019t wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Ryan added that an unfamiliar man was still inside the house. The man had warned him not to call anyone, so Ryan pretended he needed help with math in case he was overheard.<\/p>\n
