On her first day as a physical education teacher, Ms. Parker was determined to make every student feel included.<\/p>\n
She led her class of sixteen-year-olds onto the soccer field, divided them into teams, and started a friendly match. Within minutes, most of the students were running, laughing, and shouting for the ball.<\/p>\n
But one boy stood alone near the goal at the far end of the field.<\/p>\n
He wasn\u2019t talking to anyone. He barely moved.<\/p>\n
Ms. Parker immediately felt sorry for him. She remembered how difficult high school could be, especially for students who felt left out. Wanting to help, she walked across the field and stood beside him.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you okay?\u201d she asked kindly.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, miss,\u201d the boy replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, you don\u2019t have to stand here alone. Why don\u2019t you go join the others?\u201d<\/p>\n
The boy looked confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I should stay here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Ms. Parker smiled encouragingly. \u201cDon\u2019t be nervous. I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll let you play.\u201d<\/p>\n
The teenager glanced toward the game, then back at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey already did.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before she could respond, a student kicked the ball toward them. The boy quickly caught it and shouted, \u201cCome on! I\u2019m the goalkeeper!\u201d<\/p>\n
The entire class burst into laughter.<\/p>\n
Ms. Parker covered her face, then started laughing too.<\/p>\n
Later, she admitted it was the most embarrassing moment of her first day.
