His wife, Laura, and their two young children had lived in my house for almost six years. Michael had helped with expenses, but after losing him, every room suddenly felt heavy with grief.<\/p>\n

Instead of dealing with that pain, I took it out on Laura.<\/p>\n

One evening, I told her she needed to find somewhere else to live.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis house can\u2019t support everyone forever,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

She looked stunned but didn\u2019t argue.<\/p>\n

A few days later, while organizing Michael\u2019s belongings, I found a folder from an attorney.<\/p>\n

Inside was an agreement I had completely forgotten signing years earlier.<\/p>\n

When Michael helped me pay off a large portion of my mortgage during a difficult financial period, we had added him to the property agreement.<\/p>\n

After his death, his ownership interest transferred to Laura and the children.<\/p>\n
