I had spent years teaching my six-year-old son, Mason, that a gentleman helps people and treats them with respect.

My husband Ryan usually joked about my “gentleman training.”

Then came his company beach picnic.

Ryan hated the beach, but suddenly he was excited because his new boss, Lauren, would be there.

At the beach, I struggled carrying bags and the cooler while Ryan barely helped.

Later, I asked him to put sunscreen on my back.

“I feel awful in this heat,” he complained.

Then Lauren arrived.

Suddenly, Ryan felt perfectly fine.

He carried her bag, moved the umbrella for her, brought her a cold drink—and eagerly rubbed sunscreen across her shoulders.

When I questioned him, Ryan snapped:

“Stop embarrassing me. She’s my boss.”

Mason heard everything.

Twenty minutes later, Ryan called out for someone to bring him something cold.

Mason quietly filled his yellow bucket with ice water, walked over, and dumped it over Ryan’s head.

Ryan exploded.

“What are you doing?!”

Mason calmly replied:

“Teaching you some manners, Dad.”

Lauren asked why.

Mason explained, “Mom says a gentleman helps people and doesn’t make them feel small.”

Lauren looked at Ryan.

“Courtesy that depends on someone’s job title isn’t courtesy.”

Ryan went silent.

Later, he apologized to me.

“You carried everything while I worried about impressing Lauren. I treated you like the problem.”

I nodded.

“An apology is a start.”

Mason smiled.

Apparently, gentleman training had worked better than Ryan thought.
