I judged our new neighbor, Harry, the moment I saw his tattoos, lip ring, and patched leather jacket. As a single mother, I wanted my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rory, nowhere near him.

Then Harry knocked with a video of Rory secretly performing at an open mic. She was talented, but a local musician named Adrian had approached her afterward. Harry warned that Adrian exploited young artists.

I confronted Rory. Adrian had offered guitar lessons, and after meeting him, I agreed. She was terrified, but her dated recording proved she’d written the song first.

Backstage, Adrian threatened to embarrass her. Rory nearly backed out.

Then she stepped onto the stage.

At first, the crowd talked over her. But she kept singing. One by one, people stopped. By the final chord, the room erupted in applause.

Rory ran offstage smiling and asked Harry about more performances.

The neighbor I’d judged by his appearance had protected my daughter’s dream.

I judged our new neighbor, Harry, the moment I saw his tattoos, lip ring, and patched leather jacket.
