My eleven-year-old daughter Miri offered to walk ahead with Max, her service dog-in-training. She takes that role seriously. Max does too\u2014calm, focused, steady.<\/p>\n
I was two aisles over when I heard a woman yelling.<\/p>\n
I rushed over and froze.<\/p>\n
A stranger stood inches from my daughter\u2019s face, pointing like she\u2019d caught her doing something horrible.
\u201cYou can\u2019t bring a dog in here unless you\u2019re blind!\u201d she snapped. \u201cWhere\u2019s your parent?\u201d<\/p>\n
Miri stood still, gripping Max\u2019s leash, chin lifted just enough to hold herself together. Max didn\u2019t move\u2014perfectly trained, completely calm.<\/p>\n
\u201cTake your mutt and get out,\u201d the woman finished.<\/p>\n
Without a word, Miri turned and walked outside. Head high. Tears waiting.<\/p>\n
I found her on a bench, wiping her eyes, trying to smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cStay here,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ll be right back.\u201d<\/p>\n
I walked straight to the woman, loud enough for everyone to hear.
\u201cDo you always harass children with disabilities, or was today special?\u201d<\/p>\n
She turned red fast. \u201cI didn\u2019t know\u2014she looks fine\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you decided you were the judge?\u201d I said. \u201cShe\u2019s eleven. And her dog behaved better than you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The manager asked what happened. I told him everything.<\/p>\n
The woman was asked to leave.<\/p>\n
When I sat back beside Miri, she whispered, \u201cDid you say something?\u201d<\/p>\n

She finally cried\u2014safe, seen, protected.<\/p>\n
