For two years, I walked my neighbor\u2019s granddaughter, Marissa, to school. The first day I met her, she was crying behind an apartment building because it was \u201cdaddy-daughter day\u201d and she had no one. Her dad was in prison, her mom was gone, and her grandmother was too sick to walk her.<\/p>\n

I offered to go\u2014just for that day.<\/p>\n

But \u201cjust for today\u201d turned into every morning at 7 a.m. She\u2019d wait on the porch like I was the sun coming up. Over time, she started calling me Daddy Mike<\/strong>. I tried to correct her, but her grandmother quietly asked me not to. \u201cIf it helps her heal,\u201d she said, \u201cplease don\u2019t take that away.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t soften it. He called it a \u201cdeal.\u201d He admitted he didn\u2019t want her, and he wanted a clean break\u2014papers signed, responsibility transferred.<\/p>\n

I was terrified. I was 58. What if I failed her?<\/p>\n

But Marissa looked at me like I was the only safe thing left.<\/p>\n
