After my husband passed, the silence in my house became unbearable. That\u2019s when Pearl and Buddy came into my life. They are small dogs, both unable to use their back legs. With their little wheel carts, they don\u2019t walk or run. They roll\u2014with joy, confidence, and wagging tails.<\/p>\n

Most people smile when they see them. Children ask questions. Neighbors stop to admire them. But one afternoon, as we were halfway down the block, a woman named Marlene stepped outside, stared at Pearl\u2019s wheels, and said loudly, \u201cThose dogs are disgusting. Get rid of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
