My three-year-old son Johnny used to love daycare \u2014 until one morning, he woke up screaming and begged me not to go.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought it was a phase. The pediatrician said it was likely separation anxiety. But each day, Johnny\u2019s panic grew worse. By Friday, he was shaking in fear just hearing the word \u201cdaycare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he whispered something that stopped me cold: \u201cNo lunch, Mommy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I decided to pick him up early the next day and arrived during lunchtime. Through the dining room window, I saw an older woman forcing a spoon into Johnny\u2019s mouth while he cried, telling him he couldn\u2019t leave until his plate was empty.<\/p>\n

I rushed inside and took him home immediately.<\/p>\n

Later, Johnny admitted the woman would scold kids who didn\u2019t finish their food, calling them \u201cbad\u201d and letting others laugh at them. He wasn\u2019t afraid of daycare \u2014 he was terrified of being humiliated.<\/p>\n

When I confronted the director, she revealed the woman was her aunt \u2014 an untrained volunteer working unsupervised.<\/p>\n

I filed a report with the state.<\/p>\n

An inspection found the daycare over capacity, understaffed, and allowing unvetted volunteers to discipline children. Several kids admitted they\u2019d been forced to eat against their will.<\/p>\n

The daycare lost its license.<\/p>\n

Now Johnny attends a new center where he\u2019s happy again.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ve learned the most important lesson: always listen to your child \u2014 even when their fear sounds small.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
