I made the decision decades ago not to have biological children. It wasn\u2019t dramatic \u2014 it was simply right for me. I\u2019m now 59 and have been married to my second husband for nearly seventeen years. He has two adult children from his previous marriage, and our relationship has always been respectful but distant. I never asked them to see me as a parent, and they never did.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d asked who truly feels like family to me, I would\u2019ve said my nephew.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s 26 \u2014 my late brother\u2019s son \u2014 and over the years, he\u2019s quietly become the closest thing I have to a child. He shows up when I need help, checks in just to see how I\u2019m doing, and remembers the small things that matter.<\/p>\n

So when I updated my will, I left the bulk of my estate to him. My husband\u2019s children weren\u2019t excluded \u2014 they\u2019ll each receive a fixed sum \u2014 but I chose to reflect gratitude, not obligation.<\/p>\n
