When Anna mentioned her ten-year high school reunion, I laughed. \u201cWhy?\u201d I asked. \u201cSo you can tell everyone you stay home and wipe noses all day? Everyone else is probably doctors and executives. You\u2019ll just embarrass yourself. You\u2019re just a stay-at-home mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words hit harder than I expected. She went quiet. She didn\u2019t argue. She just didn\u2019t go.<\/p>\n

For days, she barely spoke beyond what was necessary. The warmth between us faded, and I told myself I\u2019d only been honest.<\/p>\n

Two weeks later, a large box arrived addressed to her. I opened it. Inside was a framed class photo covered in handwritten messages:<\/p>\n

There was a note from Maria\u2014her best friend, now a surgeon. The same friend I\u2019d once pointed to as \u201creal success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shame flooded me. I thought about the nights Anna stayed up with sick kids, the birthdays she planned, the life she held together while I chased promotions.<\/p>\n

When she saw the photo, she ran her fingers over the signatures. \u201cThey didn\u2019t forget me,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n
