My wife has a 13-year-old daughter, Mia, who has never accepted me or my son as part of her family. I\u2019ve spent years trying to build a relationship with her, but my wife always told me to be patient and give Mia space.<\/p>\n

Last week, my wife asked me to pay for Mia\u2019s expensive birthday party.<\/p>\n

I refused.<\/p>\n

Why? Because I found out Mia had secretly planned the party so my son wouldn\u2019t be invited. She specifically didn\u2019t want him there.<\/p>\n

That hurt enough\u2014but what made it even worse was knowing my son had already bought her a thoughtful gift, carefully picked out because he still kept trying to be kind to her despite the way she treated him. He had no idea he wasn\u2019t welcome at her celebration, and I had no idea how to explain to him why his stepsister didn\u2019t want him there.<\/p>\n

When I confronted my wife, I told her I wasn\u2019t comfortable paying for a party where my own son was intentionally excluded. I said if Mia wanted to treat us like we weren\u2019t family, then maybe her biological father should pay instead.<\/p>\n
