I rushed inside, my stomach already in knots.<\/p>\n

The house was too quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey?\u201d I called out, dropping my bag. No answer.<\/p>\n

Panic crept in as I hurried toward her room. When I pushed the door open, I froze.<\/p>\n

She was curled up in bed, flushed and shivering, her small body trembling under the blanket. A glass of water sat untouched beside her, and her phone was on the floor like she had tried to reach it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, hey\u2026 I\u2019m here,\u201d I whispered, rushing to her side.<\/p>\n

Her eyes opened slightly. \u201cYou came back\u2026\u201d she murmured, her voice weak.<\/p>\n

That hit me harder than anything.<\/p>\n

I checked her temperature\u2014still high. Guilt washed over me instantly. I had left. I had chosen work over a sick child who had no one else in that moment.<\/p>\n

Without thinking, I grabbed my keys, wrapped her in a blanket, and took her straight to the hospital.<\/p>\n

I stayed with her the entire night.<\/p>\n

At one point, she held my hand and didn\u2019t let go\u2014even in her sleep.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when it changed.<\/p>\n

I had always told myself I wasn\u2019t her mom.<\/p>\n
