At 2:14 a.m., a sheriff called me and said my teenage daughter was at the station. He wouldn\u2019t explain why\u2014only that she was \u201csafe right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart sank. She was supposed to be at her grandmother\u2019s house for Easter. As I drove there, my mind raced with fear, regret, and one painful thought: had I made a mistake trusting someone else with her?<\/em><\/p>\n

When I arrived, I saw her\u2014shaken, quiet, but safe. Then the truth came out.<\/p>\n

Around 1 a.m., she woke up to a noise and found her grandmother collapsed on the floor, barely conscious. She tried calling for help, but the call dropped. Alone, scared, and with no time to wait, she made a decision no 14-year-old should ever have to make.<\/p>\n
