I\u2019ve been with my boyfriend Jake for nearly 4 years. He moved in early and became part of our lives\u2014school runs, homework, bedtime. To my son Mark, he was basically a dad.<\/p>\n

Last week, Mark lied about homework again. Jake grounded him. I stepped in, thinking it was too much, and in the heat of the moment I said, \u201cYou\u2019re not his father.\u201d<\/p>\n

I regretted it instantly.<\/p>\n

Jake snapped, said we were done, and left. I thought he just needed space.<\/p>\n

Three days later, I found a letter he left for Mark:
\u201cYour mom is right, I\u2019m not your real dad. I tried to be\u2026 I love you like you\u2019re mine, but that\u2019s not enough.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
