Months ago, my husband and I were in a financial crisis. Rent was due, and at the same time I was a bridesmaid in a friend\u2019s wedding. She demanded $350 for a bridal event. I chose rent\u2014obviously\u2014and explained the situation.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t understand. She called me a bad friend and immediately demoted me from bridesmaid to guest. Just like that, years of friendship ended over money.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, she called me out of nowhere. Her voice was shaky. \u201cIt\u2019s serious\u2026 my fianc\u00e9 and I need to borrow money. You\u2019re the only one who can help us.\u201d<\/p>\n
They had both lost their jobs and were drowning in debt.<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t ignore the irony. The same person who once shamed me for not spending money on her event was now asking me for help. She had clearly heard that our situation had improved and that we were preparing to buy a house.<\/p>\n
