My wife was diagnosed with lung cancer when our daughter was only three. Overnight, our world became hospitals, test results, sleepless nights, and trying to smile in front of a little girl who didn\u2019t understand why Mommy was always tired.<\/p>\n
I tried to stay strong. I handled the bills, cooked meals, braided our daughter\u2019s hair terribly, and told everyone we were \u201changing in there.\u201d But inside, I was falling apart. Watching the person you love suffer while feeling completely powerless changes something in you.<\/p>\n
One night, after another exhausting round of treatment, I sat beside her hospital bed while she pretended to sleep. The room was dark except for the glow of the monitors. I held her hand and whispered, \u201cI want you to stay. I don\u2019t know how to do this without you.\u201d<\/p>\n
A few seconds later, she squeezed my hand gently.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m still here,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
