I delivered a pizza to an elderly woman on a freezing March night. Her house was dark, colder inside than outside, and the only light came from an open refrigerator that was almost empty. She tried to pay me with a sandwich bag full of coins she\u2019d carefully counted twice.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when I realized this wasn\u2019t a pizza craving.<\/p>\n
It was probably the only hot meal she\u2019d had in days.<\/p>\n
After I left, I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about her sitting alone in that freezing house pretending she was \u201cperfectly fine.\u201d So instead of going back to work, I drove to the police station and asked them to do a welfare check.<\/p>\n
When I drove past her house later, an ambulance was outside.<\/p>\n
As paramedics helped her into the vehicle, she pointed at me and said:
