After a long exhausting day, I stopped at Subway because I didn\u2019t have the energy to cook. While waiting in line, I noticed three kids standing quietly at the counter counting crumpled dollar bills and loose coins.<\/p>\n
They couldn\u2019t have been older than thirteen or fourteen.<\/p>\n
Instead of ordering meals for themselves, they bought one foot-long sandwich to split three ways. When the cashier gave them the total, they carefully counted every coin until they finally realized they had just enough.<\/p>\n
Then one of the girls softly said,
\n\u201cGuess we don\u2019t have enough for a cookie.\u201d<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t sound angry or upset. Just accepting.<\/p>\n
That small sentence hit me harder than I expected.<\/p>\n
When it was my turn to order, I added a cookie for them without even thinking. But before I could pay, the cashier quietly stopped me.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cMy boss already covered their meal after seeing them count their money.\u201d<\/p>\n
I just stood there stunned for a second.<\/p>\n
The kindness I thought I was about to offer had already happened before I even noticed.<\/p>\n
The cashier slipped the cookie into their bag anyway, and the kids left smiling quietly.<\/p>\n
Sitting there afterward, I realized something important:
