My husband and I have been married for six years. Before we met, he spent seven years with his ex, Jess. Near the end of their relationship, she became pregnant by another man who disappeared when he learned the truth. Soon after, she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Kate.<\/p>\n
Kate, now six, was raised by her grandmother while my husband remained loosely involved through visits, gifts, and occasional financial support. When we married, it was understood that Kate was not our responsibility.<\/p>\n
Now her grandmother is seriously ill and can no longer care for her. Social services have become involved, and my husband wants us to adopt Kate permanently.<\/p>\n
