He Didn’t Want a Baby—He Wanted Approval

When I told my ex I might be pregnant, he lit up instantly.

Suddenly, he was attentive in ways I’d never seen before—bringing me snacks, rubbing my feet, talking about how our lives were about to “change forever.” I thought it was sweet. I thought maybe this was the moment he was finally stepping up.

Then I took the test.

Negative.

I told him, expecting a normal reaction—maybe relief, maybe disappointment. But instead, he just stared at me. Quiet. Blank.

Then he said, almost carefully,
“Could you… take another one? Maybe a different brand?”

That’s when something felt off.

After a bit of pushing, the truth came out—and it hit harder than I expected.

He didn’t want a baby because he loved me. He didn’t even want a baby for the child.

He wanted a baby because he thought it would impress his parents.

In his mind, becoming a father would prove he had “grown up” enough for them to let him move back home and finally start his life “properly.”

A whole human life… as a shortcut to validation.

That was the moment I realized—I wasn’t dating a man ready for a future.

I was dating someone still trying to earn permission to grow up.
