If you have these lines on your nails, you should pay attention.

💅 What Do Lines on Your Nails Really Mean?

Nail ridges are more than just a cosmetic issue — they can sometimes reveal important clues about your health.

Vertical lines, which run from the cuticle to the tip, are common as people age because cell renewal slows down over time. In many cases, they’re harmless. However, when paired with brittle texture, discoloration, or unusual nail shape, they may point to conditions like eczema, skin disorders, or iron deficiency anemia.

Horizontal ridges, known as Beau’s lines, can be more serious. These deep grooves may appear after severe illness, stress, trauma, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or even chemotherapy. When they show up across multiple nails, doctors often investigate underlying health problems.

Nutrient deficiencies can also play a major role. Low levels of protein, zinc, calcium, or vitamin A may weaken the nails and cause visible ridges.

Dark red, brown, or black marks under the nail should never be ignored, especially if they appear without injury. In rare cases, they may signal serious conditions such as melanoma or heart infections.

Your nails can reveal more about your body than you think. If you notice sudden changes in color, texture, or shape, it may be time to speak with a healthcare professional.
