My 12-Year-Old Son’s Baseball Coach Gave Him a $400 Glove for His Birthday – When I Checked the Lining, I Stopped Breathing

As a single mom, I’d learned to be suspicious of expensive gifts, so when my 12-year-old son’s baseball coach gave him a $400 glove, I couldn’t ignore the uneasy feeling. My fears exploded when I found a hidden note inside telling Mason to keep a secret and meet at an abandoned cabin with a mysterious key.

Terrified, I called 911, only to discover Mason had already left. I raced to the cabin expecting the worst and kicked the door open without hesitation.

Instead of danger, I found string lights, flowers, and a handmade sign reading, “Will You Marry Me?” Standing inside was Coach Daniel—and beside him was Mason, proudly explaining that he had asked Daniel to become his dad because he saw how happy he made me.

Daniel admitted the secret note was a terrible idea but insisted it was only meant to help Mason plan a surprise proposal for my birthday. Then, with tears in his eyes, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

Right as I said yes, the police arrived in response to my emergency call, only to find a proposal instead of a crime scene. Looking back, I realized my son had figured out something I’d been too afraid to admit: we were already a family—I just needed the courage to let myself believe it.
