Two Days Before Our Wedding, I Reached Behind My Fiancé’s Childhood Couch to Grab My Phone – What I Pulled Out Instead Made Me Call the Authorities Instead of Walking Down the Aisle

Two days before my wedding, my phone slipped behind a couch in my fiancé Nathan’s childhood home. While reaching for it, I found a dusty pink backpack containing his aunt Margaret’s ID, credit cards, signed checks, phone, and medication.
At first, I was confused. Then I found a note in Margaret’s handwriting asking Nathan to return her cards because she needed to pay for her room. When I called her residence, staff told me Nathan had signed her out that morning—but she had never returned.
I locked myself in the bathroom and called the police.
Nathan claimed Margaret was home, but officers found her stranded outside a closed bank. She said Nathan had taken her belongings and driven away after she refused to give him more money.
Then our wedding planner revealed something worse: Margaret’s card had been used to pay for the reception, flowers, and upgrades Nathan had approved.
Nathan insisted it was a loan and said Margaret was confused. But Margaret arrived at the rehearsal dinner and faced him.
“I forget where I leave my glasses,” she said. “I didn’t forget telling you no.”
I canceled the wedding that night.
Months later, Nathan accepted a plea requiring repayment and banning him from accessing Margaret’s accounts.
I thought ending the wedding meant losing my future.
Instead, I saved it.
