The Woman Who Filmed Me in the Supermarket

I was already exhausted when my seven-year-old son, Noah, had a meltdown in the supermarket.

He was tired, overwhelmed, and crying while I tried to carry groceries and get us through the checkout line.

That was when a woman behind us started sighing loudly.

Then she pulled out her phone and began filming.

I tried to ignore her.

But as we walked toward the exit, she said, “People like you shouldn’t have kids.”

I turned around, furious.

Before I could say anything, Noah suddenly stopped crying.

He was staring past her.

“Mom,” he whispered. “That man is taking her purse.”

I looked over and saw a teenager quietly lifting the woman’s handbag from her cart while she was focused on recording me.

I shouted.

The boy dropped the purse and ran.

The woman spun around, shocked.

For several seconds, nobody said anything.

Then she picked up her bag and looked at me.

Her face turned red.

“I… I’m sorry,” she muttered.

Noah tugged on my sleeve.

“Can we go home now?”

I nodded.

As we walked outside, he asked why the woman had been angry with me.

I told him some people make judgments when they only see a few difficult minutes of someone else’s day.

He thought about that and said, “She didn’t see the whole story.”

Exactly.

And neither did I.

The child she thought was causing a scene was the same child who noticed the danger nobody else saw.
