I Raised My Orphaned Niece—Then I Overheard Her Cruel Wedding Plan

My niece Megan lost both her parents when she was only ten. I had no children of my own, so I stepped in and raised her as if she were my daughter.

Nearly twenty years later, Megan was preparing to marry Tyler, her boyfriend of ten years and the father of her three children. I wanted her wedding day to feel special, so I offered to pay for the beautiful dress she had always dreamed about.

A few days later, I was working in the garage when I overheard Megan speaking to Tyler on the phone.

“Uncle Tim is paying,” she laughed. “He always gives me whatever I want. Once the wedding is over, we’ll convince him to help with the house too.”

Then Tyler asked whether they planned to invite me to the reception.

Megan replied, “Of course. We need him there long enough to hand over the checks.”

My heart broke.

I had never expected repayment for raising her, but hearing her treat my love like an open bank account destroyed something inside me.

The next morning, I canceled the dress order and told Megan she would need to pay for her own wedding.

She became furious and accused me of ruining her special day.

I calmly repeated every word I had overheard.

Her face went pale.

Weeks later, she returned alone, crying. She admitted that she had taken my kindness for granted and apologized sincerely.

I attended the wedding—but I didn’t pay for it.

Love means supporting someone, not allowing them to use you.
