My 12-Year-Old Daughter Cut Off Her Hair for a Girl with Cancer – Then the Principal Called and Said, ‘You Need to Come Now and See What Happened with Your Own Eyes’

The principal called and told me six strange men had arrived at school asking for my daughter by name.

Three months earlier, I had lost my husband, Jonathan, to cancer.

So I raced there terrified.

The night before, my daughter Letty had cut off her long hair after seeing her classmate Millie—who was recovering from cancer—being bullied because of her hair loss.

Letty wanted her hair donated for a wig.

When I entered the school office, Millie was sitting there wearing it.

But that wasn’t what stopped me.

On the principal’s desk sat Jonathan’s old yellow work helmet.

The six men were his former coworkers.

One of them handed me an envelope in Jonathan’s handwriting.

They explained that while he was sick, Jonathan had created a workplace fund to help families struggling with cancer expenses.

After hearing what Letty had done for Millie, they knew exactly where the money should go.

Then one coworker read something Jonathan had left behind:

“Letty will always lead with her heart. Piper will pretend she’s fine and carry too much alone. Don’t let either of them stand alone.”

I broke down.

Later, I opened my own letter.

Jonathan had written:

“If Letty ever does something that breaks your heart open in the good way, don’t close it again out of fear. Let people love you.”

Jonathan never came home to us.

But that day, through our daughter’s kindness, it felt like his love somehow did.
