The Secret Behind My Client’s Earrings

I had been doing Caroline’s hair for almost four years.

She was wealthy, always perfectly dressed, and usually arrived wearing jewelry that probably cost more than my car.

A few days after one of her appointments, she called me crying.

“I think I lost my earrings at your salon.”

She described them as small diamond drops with an unusual clasp.

I promised I would look.

After closing, I checked under chairs, behind cabinets, and even inside the laundry bins.

Finally, when I moved one of the styling tables, I found them.

I called Caroline immediately.

She arrived less than twenty minutes later.

The moment she saw the earrings, she grabbed them.

“Yes. These are mine.”

Then she stopped.

Her face changed completely.

She turned one over and stared at a tiny engraving on the back.

I asked what was wrong.

Caroline sat down.

“These weren’t supposed to still exist.”

I thought she meant they were valuable.

Instead, she told me they had belonged to her younger sister, who died many years earlier.

Caroline had given the earrings away after the funeral because looking at them hurt too much.

Years later, her husband unknowingly bought them from an estate jeweler and gave them to her as an anniversary gift.

She had recognized them immediately but never told him.

“I kept thinking maybe it was somehow meant to happen,” she said.

Then she looked at me and laughed through tears.

“And now I almost lost them again.”

I handed her the little pouch I had placed them in.

She hugged me before leaving.

After that day, she stopped referring to them as her diamond earrings.

She simply called them “my sister’s earrings.”
