After 48 Hours up with Our Sick Baby, My MIL Took My Husband Home – What I Did Next Made Her Scream, ‘How Could You Do This to Us?!’

Three months after our daughter Lily was born, I thought I was raising her alone because my husband David’s employer had canceled his paternity leave.
Every morning, he dressed for work and left the house.
Then Lily got sick.
She had a 102-degree fever, and I begged David for ten minutes of help.
Instead, he said, “I earn the money. That’s my contribution.”
That night, his mother Susan arrived, packed his suitcase, and took him home with her.
The next morning, I found a folder in the guest room.
Inside were pay stubs marked:
PARENTAL LEAVE — PAID.
For three months, David had been receiving full paid leave.
The money was going into an account he shared with Susan.
I called his office.
He had never returned to work.
Then I called a coworker.
David had been spending every day at his mother’s house while pretending to go to work.
For three months, I had been exhausted, caring for our newborn alone while he lied to my face.
So I contacted an attorney, my bank, a locksmith—and David’s HR department.
That afternoon, he showed up stuttering badly.
“Please. I can explain.”
I looked at him and finally understood.
“It was easier to disappoint your wife than your mother.”
Then I handed him the legal paperwork.
He left.
I picked up Lily and made myself one promise:
She would never grow up believing someone else’s approval mattered more than keeping your word.
