While My Family Fought Over Grandma’s Will, I Was the Only One Who Took Her Beloved Dog and Discovered the Secret She Left Behind — Story of the Day

When Grandma died, my relatives rushed to her house, not to grieve, but to search for a will. I was the only one who took her old dog, Berta, home—never imagining she carried Grandma’s final secret.

Grandma had been wealthy but strict. She never gave handouts, only paid for education, believing everyone should build their own life. Because of that, most of the family had ignored her for years. I was the exception. For the last six months of her life, I cared for her while working as a nurse. She never made things easier for me, but she always believed in me.

At the reading of the will, the lawyer announced that no one in the family would receive an inheritance. The room erupted in anger. When the topic turned to Berta, my relatives coldly suggested putting her down. Despite my small apartment and higher rent, I took her in.

Days later, my mother accused me of hiding Grandma’s money. I truly had nothing—until I noticed an engraving on Berta’s collar. It led me to a train station locker. Inside was Grandma’s will and a note addressed to me.

She had left everything to the person who would care for Berta without expecting anything in return. That person was me.

When my family tried to steal the will, the lawyer intervened. Grandma had made her choice clear. In the end, I didn’t just inherit money—I inherited her trust. And I planned to honor it by helping others, just as she hoped.
