My Husband Forced Me to Host His Guys’ Night While I Was in a Neck Brace – Then His Mother Walked In

I’m a 33-year-old new mom in a neck brace because my husband, Jake, was scrolling Instagram at a red light and rear-ended another car. I’m on maternity leave with our six-month-old daughter, Emma, barely able to lift my head, let alone my baby.
At first, Jake helped a little. Then his birthday came up.
A week before, he announced his friends were coming over for game night. I told him I physically couldn’t host. I can’t bend, twist, or lift. I’m in constant pain.
He rolled his eyes and said, “You’re home anyway.”
When I pushed back, he snapped, “If you don’t handle it, don’t expect me to keep giving you money.”
We had agreed my maternity leave was our plan. Now suddenly it was “his” money.
Terrified he’d cut me off while I couldn’t work, I used my emergency fund to hire a cleaner and order all the food for his party.
Friday night, he laughed with his friends while I sat on the couch in my brace, listening to him joke that I was “just hanging with the baby all day.”
Then the doorbell rang.
It wasn’t pizza. It was his mother.
She took one look at the scene, turned to him, and said, “You’re leaving. Now.”
She told his friends to go. She told Jake to get his coat. And she told him he would not be sleeping in the house he threatened to control me in.
Jake is staying with her now.
I don’t know if our marriage will survive. But for the first time since the crash, I don’t feel trapped.
I feel safe.
