My Parents Adopted My Baby and Now Expect Me to Raise Him

MY PARENTS ADOPTED MY BABY — NOW THEY EXPECT ME TO TAKE HIM BACK

I’m 28, and when I was 17 I got pregnant. The relationship was unstable, and a few weeks after my son was born, the father disappeared completely.

I knew I wasn’t ready to raise a child and wanted to place the baby for adoption. But my parents refused. They insisted they would adopt him themselves so he could stay in the family.

So they legally adopted him. New name, paperwork—everything. To the world, he became my little brother.

I moved out, finished school, and built my life. At family gatherings, I played the role of “big sister.” Over time, that’s how I started seeing him too.

My parents truly did raise him well. But now they’re in their seventies, and their health is declining.

Recently they sat me down and said they expect me to take him in and raise him.

I said no.

This was their decision. They chose to adopt him, and I already gave up control of my life once to make things easier for everyone else.

They called me selfish.

A few days later, I found a folder in their house with emails from families interested in adopting a teenage boy. On the cover my mom had written: “If B. refuses.”

Now my entire family says I’m heartless for “abandoning my brother.”

But the truth is… I never chose this life.

So tell me honestly: am I wrong for saying no?
