The Sweater I Was Too Embarrassed to Wear

When my parents divorced, I chose to live with my dad. He was much wealthier than my mom, and at fifteen, comfort mattered more to me than understanding. My relationship with my mom became distant, awkward, and strained.

On my 15th birthday, she handed me a gift she had made herself—a crocheted sweater. It was simple and clearly homemade. Compared to the brand-name clothes my friends wore, it felt embarrassing. I mumbled a quick “thanks,” shoved it in my dresser, and never wore it.

Years passed. Life moved on. My mom and I rarely spoke except for occasional holidays or short phone calls.

Then one day, after she passed away, I was going through her things and found a small notebook tucked inside a drawer. It was full of handwritten notes—patterns, yarn colors, measurements.

Next to one entry she had written:
“Started sweater for my son. Hope he likes it. Took extra shifts this week so I could buy the soft yarn.”

I sat there holding that notebook, suddenly remembering the sweater buried somewhere in my old dresser.

For the first time, I realized that what I once saw as embarrassing had actually been one of the most loving gifts anyone had ever made for me.
