I Refuse to Let My MIL See My Kids After She Crossed a Serious Line

My mother-in-law visits often on weekends. Since my husband and I both work full-time, I once asked if she could occasionally help by cooking for the kids. She refused, saying, “Do I look like a free nanny? Pay me if you want help.” Hurt and frustrated, I told her maybe she shouldn’t come over anymore.
A few days later, I got a call from my 7-year-old, crying. I rushed home and found the kitchen a mess—empty wrappers everywhere, food spilled, fridge half-empty.
My son told me Grandma had come by anyway. She said no matter what I said, she was still their grandmother. Then, to “teach me a lesson,” she took most of the groceries I had bought for the week and left.
The kids were trying to make something to eat from whatever was left.
I was furious and heartbroken. This wasn’t just about me anymore—she involved my children.
My husband says she didn’t mean harm, but I can’t see it that way. It felt intentional and completely inappropriate.
I don’t want to cut her off completely—she’s their grandmother—but I don’t know how to trust her again.
Did I go too far, or did she cross a line that can’t be ignored?
