The Box That Changed Everything

After my dad died, he left me the house and my stepmom his small shop. I didn’t hesitate—I told her, “I’m not a charity. If you want to stay, you pay rent.” She couldn’t afford it, so she left with my baby half-sister… still smiling.
Two days later, I found a box under her bed with my name on it.
Inside were printed photos of me—from when I was a baby to my teenage years. She had been quietly scrapbooking an album for my 20th birthday. My birthday was just five days away.
I froze.
I had always seen her as the enemy. She came into my life right after my mom died, and soon after, she had a child with my dad. I built walls I never let down.
But that box changed everything.
She had cared about me all along—I just refused to see it.
I went straight to the motel where she was staying and asked her to come back home. I told her I didn’t need the house to myself, especially with college coming up.
She hugged me and said, “I knew you had a good heart. You were just hiding it.”
We’re not perfect, but things are different now. I visit often, and I love watching my little sister grow up.
Letting her come back was the best decision I ever made.
