The Interview I Should’ve Walked Out Of

I took time off work, paid for my own flight, and covered my own hotel—just for a chance at this opportunity. I showed up prepared, hopeful, and ready to prove myself.
The first thing the interviewer said?
“I have no intention of hiring you. This is just a courtesy because I knew your brother.”
Just like that, everything shifted.
I still had eight hours of interviews ahead of me. Eight hours of forced conversations, polite smiles, and pretending this wasn’t a complete waste of my time and money. It was uncomfortable, frustrating, and honestly humiliating—but I stayed professional and saw it through.
Weeks later, after they couldn’t find anyone else, they reached out and offered me the job.
This time, I didn’t hesitate.
I politely declined.
Because respect matters. Effort matters. And how someone treats you when they don’t need you tells you everything about how they’ll treat you when they do.
I wasn’t going to accept an opportunity that started with disrespect.
