A Quiet Lesson at 30,000 Feet

I boarded the flight exhausted and annoyed, focused only on my own comfort. The crowded cabin felt overwhelming, and all I wanted was to get through the trip in peace. Every inconvenience—from the tight space to the noise around me—seemed unbearable, and I paid little attention to anyone else.

Then I noticed a pregnant woman sitting a row behind me. Despite the cramped conditions and discomfort, she stayed calm and composed. She didn’t complain or ask for special treatment, even though she had every reason to. Her quiet patience stood in sharp contrast to my own frustration.

Watching her made me reflect on how self-centered I had become in that moment. I realized I had been so focused on my own discomfort that I failed to consider the people around me and what they might be dealing with.

By the time the plane landed, I understood something important: empathy doesn’t require grand gestures—it starts with simply noticing others and being mindful of their struggles.

Since that day, I’ve tried to live with more patience and awareness. I’ve learned that kindness isn’t always loud or dramatic. Often, it’s found in small, thoughtful choices that can brighten someone else’s day—and in the process, change your own perspective too.
