I Won’t Babysit My Grandkids Ever Again After My Daughter and Her Husband Embarrassed Me at a Family Event

I always believed family should help family, especially when it comes to children. My daughter has three little ones, and whenever she needed someone to babysit, I was there—weekends, late nights, even canceling my own plans sometimes. I never complained because I loved spending time with my grandkids.
At a recent family dinner, my sister smiled and said, “You’re such a cool mom and grandma. Your daughter is lucky to have you.”
I expected my daughter to smile and agree. Instead, her face turned red. She slammed her fork down and said, “No, she’s not some amazing grandma. She’s just doing what she’s supposed to do. That’s what grandparents are FOR.”
The whole table went silent.
I laughed awkwardly, thinking she was joking, but then her husband chimed in and said, “Exactly. Free babysitting is the least you can do after everything parents sacrifice.”
I felt humiliated. After all the times I’d helped them—without ever asking for money or even a thank-you—they acted like I was obligated to serve them.
I stood up, grabbed my purse, and calmly said, “If you think I’m just your unpaid babysitter, then you can start paying for one.”
They thought I was bluffing.
But when they called the next weekend asking me to watch the kids, I refused. Then the texts came, accusing me of being selfish and punishing the children.
I love my grandkids dearly—but I refuse to be disrespected. Until my daughter and her husband learn gratitude, I won’t babysit ever again.
