I Refuse to Buy an Expensive Ring for My Fiancée

When I decided to propose to my girlfriend, I wanted everything to be perfect. I thought asking her sisters for help choosing the engagement ring would be a sweet idea since they knew her taste better than anyone. They immediately showed me a designer ring that cost more than I had saved in an entire year. I told them it was way beyond my budget, but they insisted, saying anything less would embarrass their sister.
I chose a different ring instead—simple, elegant, and something I could genuinely afford without putting myself in debt. I thought it was beautiful and meaningful because I picked it with love. But when I showed it to her sisters, they laughed. One of them sneered, “She’ll be ashamed to wear that cheap thing in public.” I left feeling humiliated, but still believed my girlfriend would appreciate the thought behind it.
Later that night, my girlfriend called me in tears. My heart dropped, thinking something terrible had happened. Through sobs, she asked if it was true that I had bought “a cheap ring” because I didn’t think she was worth more. Her sisters had already called her and twisted the story, telling her I had bragged about not wanting to spend real money on her.
I was furious. I explained everything and told her the truth—that I bought the best ring I could afford because I wanted to start our future responsibly, not buried in debt. After a long silence, she whispered, “That’s all I ever wanted.”
