I Stopped Giving Money to My Parents — My Mother’s Reaction Was Absolutely Disgusting

I’ve always supported my parents financially, giving them part of my salary without question. But after my first child was born, everything changed. Expenses grew, priorities shifted, and I gently told them, “Money’s tight right now. You’ll need to manage on your own.” They said they understood.

The very next day, my mom visited—and left my wife in tears.

She had already booked a summer trip with friends and demanded we help pay for it, saying she’d lose everything if we didn’t. I felt pressured, so I sent a small one-time amount just to cover cancellation fees and keep the peace.

She didn’t thank me.

Instead, she went online and posted about “how some people forget who raised them the moment they start their own family.”

A few days later, my dad called to say she wasn’t speaking to anyone—that I had “broken her heart.”

That hurt.

I love my parents deeply, but I also have a responsibility now—to my wife and my child. They depend on me in a way no one else does.

So now I’m left questioning everything… does putting my own family first make me selfish, or just a father doing what he has to do?
