The Email I Never Expected After Being Fired

The subject line alone made my stomach drop.
“Regarding Your Termination.”
My hands trembled as I opened it, expecting something cold, formal… final.
But the first line stopped me.
“We owe you an apology.”
I blinked, rereading it twice.
The email was from HR—not my boss.
They explained that my termination had been reviewed after “internal concerns” were raised. Apparently, someone had reported how abruptly I’d been let go after six years with no warnings, no documentation, nothing.
My firing… hadn’t followed company policy.
My chest tightened as I kept reading.
“Effective immediately, your termination has been reversed. You are welcome to return to your position. Additionally, we are opening an investigation into your manager’s conduct.”
I sat there, stunned.
A week ago, I had driven home feeling worthless. Like six years of loyalty meant nothing.
Now… everything had shifted.
An hour later, my phone rang.
It was my boss.
His voice wasn’t sharp this time. It was careful.
“I think we should talk,” he said.
For the first time, I didn’t feel small.
“I think HR already said everything that needed to be said,” I replied.
I hung up, heart steady.
Because this time…
I had the power to decide what came next.
