My wife passed away in 2022, leaving behind three adult children I helped raise for over a decade—yet they’ve always made it clear I’m not their parent.
After she died, things changed. They stopped contributing entirely—no chores, no effort—while I covered all utilities, food, and even hired a cleaner. Two of them work, one is still in school, and none paid rent.
So I made a decision.
I sold the house. The market was high, and it gave me a chance to move on. I gave each of them $10,000 and told them it was time to figure things out.
Now they’re upset, saying I “kicked them out of their home.”
But they never treated it like one.
They’ve since gotten an apartment together, but they’re burning through the money fast. And now, for the first time, they’re realizing what independence actually costs.
I don’t think their mother would recognize the way they treated me—or the home we built together.
