The “Ghost” Haunting My Night Shift Turned Out to Be Something Ridiculous

I work overnight security at an office building, and most nights are completely silent. One shift around 3 a.m., I started hearing soft footsteps coming from the top floor. Thinking someone had stayed late or fallen asleep at their desk, I headed upstairs to check it out.
But the moment I reached the stairwell, I froze.
The hallway lights were motion-activated… yet they stayed completely off.
That instantly made the situation feel ten times creepier.
I called out, but no one answered. The footsteps continued, slowly moving farther down the hallway every time I followed them. At that point, my imagination was running wild. Empty office buildings at 3 a.m. already feel unsettling — hearing invisible footsteps in the dark definitely didn’t help.
I kept walking toward the sound, expecting to catch someone hiding around the corner.
Instead, I discovered the least terrifying explanation possible.
The cleaning company had changed staff that week and sent a new guy who worked while wearing noise-cancelling headphones. He never heard me calling for him.
And those mysterious “footsteps” echoing through the building?
Not a ghost.
Not an intruder.
Just the brand-new robot vacuum they introduced that same night, quietly bumping around the hallways while I scared myself half to death.
