My Widowed Father Took Every Woman to the Same Restaurant – None Ever Called Him Again, so I Asked the Waitress Why

My mother died eight years ago.
For years, Dad refused to date. Then, at 68, he suddenly started seeing women again.
Six women in 18 months.
Every first date happened at the same Italian restaurant.
And every woman disappeared afterward.
When the seventh canceled, I went to the restaurant myself.
A waitress showed me the booth Dad always used and a photograph hanging behind it. Dad and Mom were in the picture—but beside them stood another woman whose face had been scratched out.
Her name was Helen.
Then I learned the impossible truth.
Before Mom died, she had created a list of seven women she thought Dad could date after her death.
Helen had originally been on it.
Then Mom crossed her name out.
Why?
Because during Mom’s illness, Helen had helped our family. Nothing romantic happened, but Mom realized Dad might someday fall in love with her.
Three weeks before dying, Mom secretly asked Helen to disappear.
“If you stay,” she wrote, “he will love you after me.”
Helen left, believing Dad wanted her gone.
Dad believed Helen had abandoned them.
One lie kept them apart for eight years.
I finally told them both
