I Humiliated My Sister for Being a Cleaner — Then I Learned the Truth at Her Funeral

For most of my life, I looked down on my older sister, Mara.
She had left school young, worked long hours as a cleaner, and never seemed able to get ahead. Meanwhile, I was the “successful one” — good grades, big plans, and a university acceptance letter that made everyone proud.
When Mara called to congratulate me, I was in a bad mood and let all my arrogance spill out.
I told her not to pretend she understood my future and said she should go back to “scrubbing toilets,” because that was all she was good for.
She went quiet, then softly said she was proud of me anyway.
Three months later, she died in a car accident.
At her funeral, I could barely look at her photo.

After the service, my aunt took me aside and handed me a folder.
Inside were payment receipts, bank transfers, and letters.
For two years, Mara had been secretly helping pay my school fees, books, and application costs. She had picked up extra cleaning shifts at night so I could stay focused on my studies.
My aunt looked at me and said, “She believed in you more than anyone.”
I broke down right there.
The sister I had judged and insulted had been sacrificing her own future to protect mine.
And the last thing she ever said to me was that she was proud.
