My Mother-in-Law’s “Special” Christmas Gift Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone

Ever since I gave birth, my mother-in-law has made little comments about my appearance. Nothing openly cruel — just constant remarks about how tired I looked or how she “bounced back much faster” after having children at my age.
At Christmas dinner, she made a big show about saving one final gift just for me.
She smiled and called it “something special,” insisting I open it in front of the whole family.
I was sitting there holding my newborn, exhausted, sore, and barely functioning from lack of sleep.
Inside the box was a gym membership.
Then she looked me up and down and said, “This should help you bounce back.”
The entire room went silent.
I felt completely humiliated. Not because of the gym itself, but because of the message behind it. I was only weeks postpartum, still healing physically and emotionally, and instead of support, I was being publicly reminded that my body apparently wasn’t acceptable enough for her.
Later, I told her privately that her gift and comments had hurt me deeply.
She immediately dismissed it and said I was “too sensitive” and that she was “only trying to help.”
Thankfully, my husband saw exactly how inappropriate it was. The very next day, he returned the membership without hesitation.
My MIL never apologized.
But interestingly enough, after that moment, the comments about my body suddenly stopped.
